What’s the best travel insurance for Vietnam in 2026?
Depends entirely on whether you’ll ride a motorbike. SafetyWing if you want trip cancellation + baggage protection on top of medical (Genki is medical-only). Genki Traveler if you’re renting a scooter (only insurer covering 125cc with conditions — check the policy wording—critical in Vietnam).
125cc scooters with conditions — check the policy wording • €1M medical • Ha Giang Loop covered
No long-term commitment • Cancel anytime • Buy while already abroad • Baggage covered • 1 child under 10 free per adult • No trip cancellation (Essential)

THE HONEST TRUTH
Should You Bother with Travel Insurance for Vietnam?
For an in-depth breakdown, read our dedicated guide: Do I Need Travel Insurance for Vietnam?
Let’s cut to it: Vietnam has no legal insurance requirement for any visa type. You can fly in tomorrow with zero coverage and nobody will stop you at immigration.
But the numbers tell a different story about why seasoned travelers never skip it for Vietnam:
17,000+
Annual road deaths — WHO estimate (WHO 2023)
90%
Of traffic fatalities involve motorbikes
Priced by aircraft and distance
Medical evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore
2
Vietnamese cities with most JCI-accredited hospitals (HCMC & Hanoi)
💡 The Simple Math
A day of travel insurance costs about $2.24 per day (SafetyWing Essential, derived from $62.72 per 4 weeks) or about €1.73 per day (Genki, derived from €52 per month). One private-hospital night in Hanoi costs more than a month of cover (see real prices). A fractured leg on the Ha Giang Loop means surgery, hospital nights and a transfer to Hanoi — the transfer alone is more than most travellers can pay upfront (motorbike coverage guide). For a two-week trip, you’re looking at one 4-week premium ($62.72 on SafetyWing Essential at ages 10-39) to avoid potential financial ruin.
Who Absolutely Needs Coverage in Vietnam
Anyone touching a motorbike — Ha Giang Loop, city commuting, island hopping. Vietnam’s roads are the #1 risk for tourists, period.
Travelers heading to remote areas — Sapa, Ha Giang, Mekong Delta, Central Highlands. Medical facilities are basic and hours from international hospitals.
Adventure travelers — Diving in Nha Trang, canyoning in Da Lat, kayaking in Ha Long Bay. These activities carry real injury risk.
Anyone carrying expensive gear — Cameras, laptops, drones. Theft on overnight buses and in hostels is well-documented.
Travelers over 50 — Higher medical risk, and premiums jump sharply after 65. Buy early before options narrow.
Typhoon season visitors (May–October) — Central Vietnam gets hit hard. Flight cancellations, flooding, and evacuations happen every year.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG
Real Costs That Hit Travelers in Vietnam
These aren’t hypotheticals—embassy reports and expat forums document cases like these every month:
🛵 Ha Giang Loop crash
Depends on surgery, hospital and nights
Fractured leg, surgery in Hanoi, 5+ days hospitalization, potential medevac
🦟 Dengue fever in Mekong Delta
Depends on hospital and length of stay
IV treatment, blood monitoring, 3–7 nights private hospital in HCMC
🤿 Diving decompression sickness
Depends on chamber access and evacuation
Hyperbaric chamber treatment, possible evacuation from Nha Trang
✈️ Medical evacuation to Bangkok
Depends on aircraft and distance
Air ambulance for complex trauma, cardiac events, or ICU-level care unavailable locally
📱 Gear stolen on sleeper bus
Depends on the value of what was taken
Laptop + phone + camera from overhead compartment on HCMC–Nha Trang route
Don’t let a preventable accident drain your savings. Get covered in 5 minutes.
⚠️ AVOID THESE
5 Insurance Mistakes That Cost Vietnam Travelers Thousands
We see these errors repeated constantly in expat forums and embassy reports. Every single one is avoidable.
Riding a 125cc Honda Wave with a policy that caps at 50cc
The standard rental in Vietnam is a 110–125cc automatic scooter. Most budget travel policies only cover engines up to 50cc—which barely exists here. If you crash on anything larger, your claim gets denied on the spot. Check which policies actually cover 125cc.
💸 Example cost: A 110–125cc crash on the Ha Giang Loop with hospital admission and surgery can run to a bill that depends on the surgery, the number of hospital nights and the transfer to Hanoi — all of it out of pocket if your policy excludes the bike size you rented. Riding the Loop? Read which travel insurance actually covers the Ha Giang Loop before you rent.
Trusting credit card “free travel insurance”
Credit card coverage tops out far below dedicated plans, lasts 15–30 days max, never covers motorbikes, and only activates if you booked the trip with that specific card. For Vietnam, where a medevac to Bangkok costs more than most travellers can pay upfront, that ceiling is dangerously low.
💸 Example cost: A helicopter evacuation from Sapa for a serious trekking injury is priced by the aircraft and the distance, and lands well above the medical cap typical of premium credit-card travel benefits.
Picking the cheapest policy without reading exclusions
That ultra-cheap plan looks great until you discover it has a high deductible per claim, a low medical cap (one surgery blows through it), and excludes every activity you actually planned to do in Vietnam. The small difference between a bad plan and a good one could save you the whole bill.
💸 Real cost: “Budget” policies with high deductibles mean even a routine doctor visit in Vietnam (priced by the clinic, and cheap at most of them) barely clears the threshold.
Skipping medical evacuation coverage
Vietnam’s JCI-accredited hospitals are concentrated in HCMC and Hanoi. If you get seriously hurt in Sapa, Ha Giang, Da Lat, or anywhere rural, you may need an air ambulance to Bangkok or Singapore. Without medevac coverage, the transport alone — priced by aircraft, distance and medical crew — is a bill most travellers cannot pay, before any treatment begins.
💸 Example cost: A stroke or cardiac event in Da Nang requiring evacuation to Bangkok can total a sum that depends on transport, ICU days and treatment — more than most travellers can pay upfront. With proper medevac coverage included in your plan, this is fully reimbursed.
Not saving your policy details offline
You crash your bike on a mountain pass in Ha Giang. No 4G. No WiFi. Your insurer’s app won’t load. You need the 24/7 emergency number NOW. If it’s buried in a confirmation email you can’t access, you lose precious time getting proper treatment coordinated.
💸 Real cost: Hours of delay in remote Vietnam can mean being treated at an under-equipped local clinic instead of being medevac’d to a proper facility. Screenshot your policy NOW.
✓ The Smart Approach
Buy before you fly. Verify the motorbike clause. Check your medevac limit. Save your policy offline. 15 minutes of prep can save you tens of thousands.

Genki vs SafetyWing: The Vietnam-Specific Breakdown

Our take for Vietnam specifically: If you’re touching a motorbike at any point—even once—go with Genki. The 125cc-without-license clause is unique in the market and matches Vietnam’s reality where 125cc Hondas are the standard rental. If you’re sticking to buses and taxis and want trip protection, SafetyWing is the better all-rounder.
COVERAGE EXPLAINED
What Travel Insurance Actually Covers in Vietnam
Standard travel insurance policies include these benefits. Exact limits depend on your provider and plan tier.
| Benefit | What It Pays For | Typical Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency Medical | Hospital admissions, surgery, ER visits, ambulance, prescriptions during your trip | Set by each plan: SafetyWing Essential $250,000 medical, Genki Traveler €1,000,000 — sub-limits in the wording |
| Emergency Evacuation | Air ambulance to Bangkok/Singapore, medical transport to nearest adequate hospital | Sub-limit set in each wording — ask the insurer for it in writing; the insurer organises the transport |
| Trip Cancellation | Non-refundable bookings lost due to covered reasons (sickness, family emergency, natural disaster) | Not included in Genki Traveler or SafetyWing Essential — a separate cancellation policy |
| Trip Interruption | Covers early return home costs if your trip is cut short for a covered reason | 100–150% of trip cost |

| 24/7 Assistance | Emergency helpline, hospital coordination, translation support, travel rebooking help | Included |
⚠️ CRITICAL EXCLUSIONS
What Travel Insurance Will NOT Pay For in Vietnam
This is where travelers get burned. Every denial we’ve seen traces back to one of these exclusions. Read your policy document—not the marketing page—before buying.
❌ Standard Exclusions
- Pre-existing conditions — Anything you had before purchasing the policy
- Motorbikes over 125cc — Or any bike without meeting the insurer’s license/engine requirements
- Alcohol-related incidents — Injuries sustained while intoxicated (common denial trigger in Vietnam)
- Extreme sports — Paragliding, skydiving, cliff jumping unless explicitly listed in your plan
- Illegal activities — Injuries while violating Vietnamese law (includes riding without a valid license)
- Mental health treatment — Usually excluded or capped at very low amounts
⚠️ Often Capped or Limited
- Electronics — Typically capped per item (limit in the wording) (your MacBook is worth more)
- Cash — Limited to a small total if stolen (limit in the wording)
- Dental — Emergency only, usually a small cap (limit in the wording) (Vietnam dental is cheap anyway)
- Trip delay threshold — Must be delayed 6–12 hours before benefits activate
- Outpatient visits — Basic doctor consultations may not be covered at all on travel plans
🛵 THE #1 RISK IN VIETNAM
Motorbike Coverage: The Most Important Section on This Page
Vietnam has 77 million motorbikes—more than adults in the country. Over 90% of road fatalities involve two-wheelers. If you rent a scooter (and most visitors do), this table determines whether you’re actually protected or riding naked:
For the full deep-dive: Complete Motorbike Insurance Vietnam Guide →
| Provider | Engine Limit | License Needed | Helmet Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| ⭐ Genki Traveler | Up to 125cc + 110km/h | NO (unique!) | Yes (driver only) |
| SafetyWing Essential | valid motorcycle licence + helmet required | Yes | Yes |
| SafetyWing Complete | Up to 125cc ✓ | Yes | Yes |
| Most other providers | ✗ Not covered at all | — | — |
The License Reality in Vietnam
Almost every tourist rents a scooter without a motorcycle license—and technically that makes them uninsured under most policies. Vietnamese traffic police rarely check tourist licenses, but your insurer absolutely will when you file a claim. Either get an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement before you travel, choose Genki (which waives the license requirement), or accept the risk. Read our full motorbike guide for all your options.
🛵 KEY FACTS: MOTORBIKE INSURANCE VIETNAM (2026)

- • SafetyWing: Essential plan covers 50cc only. Complete plan covers up to 125cc (requires valid license)
- • Standard rental in Vietnam: 110–125cc Honda Wave or Honda Vision ($5–$10/day)
- • Typical accident cost: depends on the hospital, the surgery and the number of nights — for fractures requiring surgery + potential evacuation from rural areas

MYTH BUSTING
Credit Card Insurance vs. Dedicated Travel Insurance for Vietnam
“My Visa card covers me.” We hear this weekly. Here’s why it rarely holds up in Vietnam:
| Feature | Credit Card | Dedicated Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Medical cap | far below dedicated plans | $250,000 (SafetyWing Essential) / €1,000,000 (Genki) |
| Duration limit | 15–30 days typically | 30–365 days |
| Motorbike accidents | ✗ Never | ✓ Some providers |
| Medical evacuation | ✗ Rarely included | ✓ Standard |
| Adventure activities | ✗ Excluded | ✓ Available |
| How to activate | Must book trip with that card | Always active once purchased |
💡 The Verdict
Credit card insurance is a thin layer of protection for short, low-activity trips. For Vietnam—with its motorbike culture, remote areas needing medevac access, typhoon disruptions, and longer stays—it’s simply not designed to handle the risks you’ll actually face. The gap between card coverage and a proper plan costs a little extra. That’s one dinner in Hanoi to avoid a potential bill that depends on the injury, the hospital and the length of stay.

What the Claim Data Tells Us About Vietnam
📊 KEY CLAIM FACTS — SOUTHEAST ASIA (2025–2026)
- • Most common claim type: Medical emergencies (gastro, dengue, motorbike accidents)
- • Fastest-growing category: Medical evacuation claims from Vietnam (limited hospital options outside HCMC/Hanoi)
- • #1 denial reason: Motorbike accident without valid license or on excluded bike type
- • Average medical claim: a modest sum, driven by the clinic and the number of consultations (minor injuries, food poisoning)
- • Average serious claim: a large sum driven by surgery, hospital nights and any transfer (surgery, multi-day hospitalization)
- • Genki claim processing: 24 hours – 3 days typically. SafetyWing: 3–7 days for standard claims
💡 How to Maximize Your Claim Success
Call your insurer BEFORE going to the hospital (they can pre-authorize and arrange direct billing)
Go to a hospital in your insurer’s network when possible (Vinmec, FV Hospital, Family Medical Practice)
Photograph everything: your injuries, the accident scene, receipts, medical documents, police reports
File your claim within 48 hours of the incident — delays give insurers grounds for denial
Keep originals of ALL documents. Vietnamese hospitals sometimes only issue one copy.

Verify motorbike engine size coverage
Most Vietnam rentals are 110–125cc. Your policy probably only covers 50cc. Check NOW.
Confirm medical evacuation limit
$100K minimum recommended. A medevac to Bangkok is priced by aircraft, distance and medical crew — a sum few travellers can pay upfront — confirm the benefit covers it.
Check if adventure activities are listed
Diving, canyoning, trekking, kayaking. If it’s not named, it’s probably excluded.

Vietnam Emergency Numbers Every Traveler Should Know
Vietnam doesn’t have a single 911-style number. Save all four below — and your insurer’s 24/7 line — to your phone before you arrive. Calls are free from any Vietnamese SIM or roaming line.
👮 POLICE
113
Crime, theft, road accidents, public safety threats
🚑 AMBULANCE
115
Medical emergency, serious injury, hospital transport
🔥 FIRE
114
Fire, gas leak, building collapse, hazardous materials
🌊 RESCUE
112
Search & rescue, typhoons, floods, landslides at sea
📞 The two most important calls after a serious accident
1. Call 115 for an ambulance — or have a local stop a passing taxi if response times are slow (common in rural areas).
2. Call your insurer’s 24/7 emergency line as soon as you’re stable. They can pre-authorise treatment, arrange direct billing with the hospital, and coordinate medevac to Hanoi, HCMC, Bangkok or Singapore if needed. Going to a hospital first without contacting your insurer often means paying upfront and chasing reimbursement later.
💡 Practical tips for foreigners
- Operators in HCMC, Hanoi and Da Nang sometimes speak basic English — in rural areas, ask a local to translate.
- State your exact location first (street name, district, nearest landmark). Use Google Maps coordinates if possible.
- Have a passport photo and your insurance details on your phone — saves precious time at hospital admission.
- Save your country’s embassy number too. The U.S. Consulate (HCMC) is on Le Duan Street, District 1; the British and Australian embassies are in Hanoi.
Backpacking Vietnam
Backpacker Insurance for Vietnam: Activities, Seasons and Multi-Country Routes
Ha Giang Loop, overnight sleeper buses, Phong Nha caves, months rather than weeks: backpackers face a different risk profile from a two-week holiday, and a fixed-date policy is the wrong tool for an open-ended trip. The two plans compared on this page — SafetyWing Essential ($62.72 per 4 weeks at ages 10-39, $0 deductible for non-US residents, cancel anytime) and Genki Traveler (from €52/month, age-based, €1,000,000 medical) — are monthly, worldwide, and can be bought while you are already in Vietnam. This section covers what they do for the things backpackers actually do.
Backpacker insurance vs a fixed-date holiday policy
Coverage by activity
| What backpackers do | SafetyWing Essential | Genki Traveler |
|---|---|---|
| 🛵 Renting a scooter — Ha Giang Loop, Hai Van Pass, Hội An | Only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet; engine-size thresholds are not in the official sources — check the wording. | Motor vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording. |
| 🚌 Sleeper buses and the Reunification Express | Medical treatment after a road accident is a normal claim; theft from a bag on the bus needs a police report within the policy’s time limit. | Medical-only plan: injuries covered, belongings not. |
| 🦇 Caving in Phong Nha, trekking in Sa Pa and Ha Giang | Leisure sports are covered in standard; higher-risk activities (kitesurfing, paragliding, parachuting, diving) need the Adventure Sports cover. Guided caving and trekking: check the activity list in the wording. | Sports included in the official positioning; the exact list and conditions per activity are in the policy wording. |
| 🤿 Diving in Nha Trang, Phú Quốc, Côn Đảo | Adventure Sports add-on on Essential (included in Complete), $100,000 lifetime cap; courses never covered. | Diving cited as included — depth and conditions per the wording. Details on our scuba diving insurance guide. |
| 🛶 Kayaking in Hạ Long Bay, surfing in Đà Nẵng and Mũi Né | Standard leisure sports; kitesurfing is an Adventure Sports activity. | Under the sports inclusion — check the wording. |
Scooter rules in full — licence, IDP, helmet, what happens after a crash — are on our motorbike insurance Vietnam guide.
Tips by season
Vietnam + Cambodia + Laos + Thailand: one policy, and the visa-run trap
The classic loop — Hanoi to Ha Giang, down the coast to HCMC, across to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, up to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, or out through Luang Prabang — is covered by either plan without a second policy, because both are worldwide. What breaks coverage is not the border but the paperwork: a Vietnam-only policy leaves you uninsured the day you cross to Cambodia for a new e-visa, and a fixed-date policy leaves you uninsured the day you decide to stay another month in Hội An.
Home-country rules still apply on a long trip: SafetyWing Essential covers you at home for 30 days per 90 days of insurance (15 for US residents); Genki limits home-country emergencies to six weeks per stay. Neither plan includes trip cancellation. For a budget comparison of the two plans and the age brackets, see the cost section and the comparison table above; for the mistakes that void backpacker claims — riding unlicensed, drinking, no police report, no receipts — see the five costly mistakes.

How we rank providers
Providers are ranked on Vietnam-specific coverage quality, not on commission rates. Our scoring weights motorbike inclusion (engine size and license clauses), medical evacuation limits, claims responsiveness, age caps, and ability to activate while already in-country. We do not accept payment for placement and we publish weaknesses alongside strengths for every plan we cover. Read the full affiliate disclosure.
