Why You Need Scuba Diving Insurance Vietnam
Scuba diving insurance Vietnam is essential because Vietnam’s diving scene is growing fast — Nha Trang, Phú Quốc, and Côn Đảo offer world-class marine encounters at budget prices. But the infrastructure for dive emergencies lags behind. Standard travel insurance usually excludes diving entirely, and Vietnam has very limited hyperbaric chamber access. (For general coverage, see our travel insurance guide.)
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: if you get decompression sickness (DCS) while diving off Côn Đảo or the Whale Island, the nearest reliable hyperbaric chamber may be in HCMC — hours away by boat then road. Serious cases require air evacuation to Bangkok. Without scuba diving insurance Vietnam, you’re looking at more than most travellers can pay upfront in treatment and transport costs.

Common Diving Risks in Vietnam
Decompression sickness (DCS) — The “bends” can occur even following dive tables correctly. Symptoms range from joint pain to paralysis. Requires immediate hyperbaric treatment.
Arterial gas embolism (AGE) — Air bubbles entering the bloodstream from rapid ascent. Medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.
Barotrauma — Ear, sinus, or lung injuries from pressure changes. Common in beginners. Can require surgery in severe cases.
Marine life injuries — Jellyfish stings, sea urchins, lionfish, stonefish. Vietnam’s waters host several venomous species. Treatment ranges from first aid to hospitalisation.
Strong currents — Nha Trang and Côn Đảo can have unpredictable currents. Drift diving incidents and surface separations happen regularly.
Remote locations — Côn Đảo, Whale Island, and Cù Lao Chàm are hours from the nearest hospital. Medical evacuation is the only option for serious incidents.
What Standard Travel Insurance Covers (and Doesn’t)
Most travel insurance either excludes diving entirely or limits coverage to 10–18m. Since typical recreational dives in Vietnam reach 20–35m, you’d be uninsured for most dives.
Allianz, AXA, most credit cards — diving excluded entirely
SafetyWing Essential — diving excluded from the basic plan
SafetyWing Complete — diving to 30m only (from $177.50/month (ages 10-39))
Genki Traveler — diving to 40m (full recreational depth)
DAN — unlimited depth for recreational diving, 24/7 hotline
Best Scuba Diving Insurance Vietnam Options
💡 Pro Tip: Match Depth to Certification
Certification sets your ceiling: Open Water 18m, Advanced Open Water 30m, Deep 40m. Neither SafetyWing nor Genki publishes a metre limit in the sources we verified — SafetyWing covers diving through its Adventure Sports cover, Genki through its sports inclusion, both “per the policy wording”. Ask the insurer in writing whether your certification depth is covered before a deep or liveaboard trip; DAN membership adds dive-specific medicine and hyperbaric support on top.
Vietnam’s Top Dive Sites & Insurance Needs
Each dive location has different depth profiles and distances from medical facilities. This affects what scuba diving insurance Vietnam coverage you need.
🤿 Nha Trang (Most Popular)
Vietnam’s dive capital. Hòn Mun Marine Protected Area, Moray Beach, Madonna Rock. Depths 10–30m. Cheapest PADI courses in Southeast Asia. Closest to a military hyperbaric facility.
Min coverage: a diving clause that covers this site’s depth — check the policy wording (Genki; SafetyWing with Adventure Sports); DAN on top for remote sites
🏝️ Côn Đảo (Best Marine Life)
Remote archipelago with pristine reefs and large pelagics. Depths 15–40m. Whale sharks, manta rays, turtles. Very remote — nearest hospital on the island is basic. Serious incidents require evacuation to HCMC.
Min coverage: a diving clause that covers this site’s depth — check the policy wording (Genki; SafetyWing with Adventure Sports); DAN on top for remote sites
🐠 Phú Quốc (Family-Friendly)
Growing dive scene in the south. An Thới archipelago, Turtle Island. Depths 8–25m. Good visibility, easy conditions. Vinmec Phú Quốc on the island for emergencies — but limited capacity.
Min coverage: a diving clause that covers this site’s depth — check the policy wording (Genki; SafetyWing with Adventure Sports); DAN on top for remote sites
🐚 Cù Lao Chàm (Near Hội An)
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve off Hội An. Depths 8–25m. Seasonal (April–September for best visibility). Nearest hospitals in Đà Nẵng (30 min by speedboat + car).
Min coverage: a diving clause that covers this site’s depth — check the policy wording (Genki; SafetyWing with Adventure Sports); DAN on top for remote sites
🐋 Whale Island (Remote Adventure)
Remote island north of Nha Trang. Whale sharks seasonally (April–July). Depths 15–35m. Very isolated — no medical facilities on island. Boat transfer to Nha Trang required for any emergency.
Min coverage: a diving clause that covers this site’s depth — check the policy wording (Genki; SafetyWing with Adventure Sports); DAN on top for remote sites
Hyperbaric Chambers in Vietnam: Very Limited
Unlike Thailand (which has 3 well-established chambers), Vietnam’s hyperbaric facilities are extremely limited. This makes medical evacuation coverage critical for divers.
HCMC Naval Hospital (Most Reliable)
Military hospital with hyperbaric facility. The most accessible chamber for civilian emergencies in southern Vietnam. Located in central HCMC.
Nha Trang Military Facility
Military hyperbaric chamber. Availability for civilians not guaranteed. Contact through dive operators in Nha Trang who maintain relationships with the facility.
⚠️ Bangkok (Evacuation Destination)
For serious DCS cases, evacuation to Bangkok’s well-equipped chambers (Naval Medical, SSS Network) may be the safest option. Air evacuation cost: varies by destination This is why DAN and medevac coverage is not optional for divers in Vietnam.

Depth Covered by Product: What Is Actually Verified
Dive forums repeat metre limits with great confidence. Our rule is stricter: we print what the official product pages say and nothing else. Here is the verified position for the products named on this page.
| Product | Diving | Depth limit | Never covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing Essential | Only with the paid Adventure Sports add-on; $100,000 lifetime cap on that cover. | Not published in the sources we verified — policy wording. | Courses and training (the school must insure you), competition, professional diving. |
| SafetyWing Complete | Adventure Sports included; same $100,000 lifetime cap; from $177.50/month at 10-39, 12-month minimum, sign-up until 64. | Not published — policy wording. | Same exclusions as Essential. |
| Genki Traveler | Sports included in the official positioning (diving, skiing, snowboarding cited); from €52/month, age-based, up to 69; €1,000,000 medical, €50 deductible (€0 if hospitalised). | The list and the conditions per activity are not published — policy wording. | Pre-existing conditions, alternative and rehabilitative care, mental health, dental except accidents. |
| DAN Europe | Dive-accident membership: hyperbaric treatment, dive-specific evacuation, 24/7 dive medicine hotline. | Per the membership plan chosen — set on DAN’s site, not verified by us. | Non-diving illness, trip cancellation, belongings. |
Practical consequence for Vietnam: a PADI Open Water course in Nha Trang is a course — SafetyWing does not cover it, the dive school’s insurance must. Certified fun dives afterwards fall under the sports cover, subject to the wording.
DAN in Context: Membership, Not Travel Insurance
DAN (Divers Alert Network) is the reference for dive accidents: a hotline staffed by dive physicians, hyperbaric chamber referrals, and evacuation organised for diving injuries. It is a membership with a dive-accident plan attached, and it is deliberately narrow. It does not pay for the dengue you catch in Nha Trang, the scooter crash on the way to the dive shop, a cancelled liveaboard or a stolen camera housing.
When DAN alone is enough
Almost never for a foreign visitor. DAN assumes you already have health cover for everything that is not a dive accident. In Vietnam, where private hospitals ask for a guarantee before treatment, that “everything else” is the bigger financial risk.
When travel insurance alone is enough
Occasional certified dives at sites close to a hospital (Nha Trang, Phú Quốc) on a plan whose diving clause you have read: SafetyWing with Adventure Sports or Genki, depth confirmed in writing. The insurer’s assistance line organises evacuation like any other medical emergency.
When you want both
Liveaboards, Côn Đảo, Whale Island, any itinerary hours from a chamber, and any diver who wants a dive physician on the phone at 2 a.m. Travel insurance carries the general medical risk; DAN carries the dive-specific expertise and logistics. Tell each insurer the other exists so the two assistance teams coordinate rather than argue.
DAN Europe’s membership price and depth rules are set on its own site and are not part of our verified data, which is why this page no longer prints a dollar figure for it.
Dive Seasons and Regions: Where Your Cover Is Tested
Vietnam’s coast runs 3,000 km from the Chinese border to the Gulf of Thailand, and the diving is seasonal by region. The season shapes the risk: monsoon swell means surface separations and drift incidents, the dry season means crowded boats and more beginners in the water.
South-central coast — Nha Trang, Whale Island (roughly February to October)
The busiest dive region and the cheapest place in Southeast Asia to get certified. Most incidents here are beginner incidents: barotrauma on the first descents, rapid ascents, ear problems. A course is not covered by SafetyWing; make sure the school’s insurance is real before you sign the waiver. The military chamber in Nha Trang is not guaranteed to civilians — your policy’s evacuation clause to HCMC is the real backstop.
Far south — Phú Quốc (roughly November to April)
Calm, shallow, family diving in the dry season. Vinmec has a hospital on the island, which makes it the least evacuation-dependent dive destination in Vietnam — but a chamber is still on the mainland. Standard travel cover with a diving clause is usually adequate here.
Côn Đảo (roughly March to September)
The best marine life and the worst logistics: an island hospital that stabilises, then a flight or a long boat to HCMC. Deeper profiles, currents and remoteness make this the one Vietnamese destination where we would not dive without both a travel policy with diving cover and DAN.
Central coast — Cù Lao Chàm, Đà Nẵng (roughly March to September)
Shallow reef diving off Hội An in the dry months; closed by swell in the typhoon season. Đà Nẵng’s hospitals are a short transfer away, which keeps the evacuation question simple — read the “no-fly after diving” advice before booking a same-day flight home.
North — Hạ Long Bay, Cát Bà
Limited visibility and a small dive scene; most visitors kayak rather than dive. Snorkelling is treated as a normal activity by both SafetyWing and Genki; scuba here follows the same clause rules as anywhere else.
Reading Your Policy’s Diving Clause: 7 Checks Before You Descend
- Is diving named at all? If the word does not appear in the covered-activities list or the sports add-on, assume it is excluded.
- Depth. Is a metre limit written down, or is it “recreational limits” / “within your certification”? Write to the insurer if the wording is silent — an email answer is evidence at claim time.
- Certification and supervision. “With a licensed operator”, “within certification limits”, “no solo diving” — each is a condition that can void a claim.
- Courses. SafetyWing never covers courses or training; check whether your plan treats a Discover Scuba session or an Open Water course as a course.
- Hyperbaric treatment and evacuation. Are chamber sessions a medical expense like any other, and does the evacuation benefit cover transfer from an island to a chamber city?
- Waiting period. Genki applies a 14-day waiting period for emergencies if you had no prior cover — buy before you fly, not the night before the boat.
- Cap on sports claims. SafetyWing’s Adventure Sports cover carries a $100,000 lifetime cap, separate from the medical maximum; know which pot a dive claim comes out of.
After an incident: call the assistance line before treatment if you can, keep every chamber and hospital document, ask for English copies, and do not fly until a dive physician clears you. For the general claims process in Vietnam, see the claims section of our travel insurance guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my regular travel insurance cover scuba diving in Vietnam?
Usually not adequately. Most standard policies either exclude diving entirely or limit coverage to 10–18m. Since typical recreational dives in Vietnam go to 20–35m, you’d be uninsured for most dives. Always check depth limits before you dive.
Do I need dive insurance for a discover scuba / try dive?
Yes, though requirements are simpler since try dives stay within 12m. Most travel insurance with diving coverage works at this depth. But dedicated dive insurance like DAN provides specialised dive medicine support that general insurers cannot.
What’s the difference between DAN and travel insurance?
DAN provides specialised dive accident coverage — hyperbaric treatment, dive medicine specialists, emergency evacuation. But it doesn’t cover non-diving medical issues, trip cancellation, or lost belongings. Genki Traveler combines both: travel medical plus diving under its sports inclusion (conditions per the policy wording). Ideally, serious divers have DAN plus travel insurance.
How much does hyperbaric chamber treatment cost in Vietnam?
A single session costs an amount that varies by hospital Most DCS cases require 3–6 sessions, bringing total treatment to a cost that varies by hospital Severe cases can exceed $50,000. Add evacuation costs if you’re diving from a remote island. This is why dive insurance is essential.
Does the dive shop’s insurance cover me?
Dive shop liability insurance protects the shop from lawsuits — not your medical bills. Some shops offer basic accident coverage (varies by hospital), but it won’t cover serious emergencies like DCS treatment. Always carry your own scuba diving insurance Vietnam coverage.
Can I fly after a diving accident?
No. Flying after a dive injury — especially suspected DCS — can be fatal. Reduced cabin pressure worsens symptoms dramatically. Standard advice: no flying for 24–48 hours after normal diving. After a suspected DCS incident, do not fly until cleared by a dive physician.
Can I buy dive insurance after arriving in Vietnam?
Yes. DAN can be purchased online anytime. Genki can be purchased abroad (14-day wait without prior coverage). SafetyWing starts immediately. Always buy before your first dive.
What’s the best insurance for a liveaboard dive trip?
For liveaboard trips to remote sites like Côn Đảo or Whale Island, consider DAN for specialised dive emergency coverage (24/7 hotline, unlimited hyperbaric) plus Genki Traveler for comprehensive medical including diving under its sports inclusion (check the wording for your depth). Liveaboards take you to remote locations where evacuation costs are significant.
Does SafetyWing cover my PADI course in Nha Trang?
No. SafetyWing never covers courses or training — the dive school’s insurance must cover you during an Open Water or Advanced course. Once certified, fun dives fall under the Adventure Sports cover (paid add-on on Essential, included in Complete), with a $100,000 lifetime cap on that cover and the depth conditions set by the policy wording.
Does Genki Traveler publish a depth limit for scuba diving?
Not in the sources we verified. Genki’s official positioning lists sports as included and cites diving, skiing and snowboarding; the exact list and the conditions per activity are in the policy wording. Ask Genki in writing whether your certification depth is covered before a deep or liveaboard trip, and keep the answer with your policy.
Do I still need DAN if I have Genki or SafetyWing?
For occasional certified dives near Nha Trang or Phú Quốc on a plan whose diving clause you have read, travel insurance alone is usually adequate. For Côn Đảo, Whale Island, liveaboards or any site hours from a chamber, add DAN: it brings dive physicians, chamber referrals and dive-specific evacuation that a general insurer does not have. DAN never replaces the travel policy, because it pays for dive accidents only.
Dive Covered, Dive Confident

How we evaluate dive insurance
For diving cover we weight: maximum depth covered (18m / 30m / 40m / unlimited), certification requirements (open water minimum, dive master, instructor), waiting period before diving claims become payable, hyperbaric chamber treatment cover, dive-specific evacuation, no-fly time advice, and combo with general medical / trip-cancellation. We don’t accept payment for placement and we publish weaknesses alongside strengths. Read the full affiliate disclosure.
